“Under the Persimmon Tree” by Suzanne Fisher Staples

Nadschmah lives with her family in a small village in northern Afghanistan. Life there is barren, but the family is satisfied. But one day the dreaded Taliban invade the village and deport all the male inhabitants. In a US bomb attack on the village her mother and the newborn brother are killed. Together with relatives she takes the arduous path to the refugee camp in Peshawar. Her hope is to find her father and her brother. In Peshawar lives converted to Islam American Nasrat. She teaches refugee children in her garden. When Nadschmah arrives in Peshawar, she is brought to Nasrat.
