After Roald Amunsen have reached the South Pole in December 1911, there was only one great adventure left: the crossing of the Antarctic. Sir Ernest Shackleton started an attempt in 1914, which failed because his ship “Endurance” got stuck in the Weddell Sea. Inspired by the great conquerors and adventures of the Antarctic, Reinhold Messner and Arved Fuchs started the Antarctica crossing in October 1989. They reached the South Pole at the end of December 1989 and the McMurdo research station on the Ross Sea in February 1990. Reinhold Messner describes what happened between October 1989 and February 1990 in this book.
